Crime alert: Marcy, U burglaries; crime reports June 6–17

Crime alert: occupied residential burglaries in Marcy, U of M

The MPD is cautioning residents in the Marcy-Holmes and U of M areas about a recent string of burglaries occurring During the week preceding June 17.

Three burglaries over that time involved unlocked residences in which victims were either home or had just arrived to find the suspect in their residence, according to the crime alert from the 2nd precinct. According to the victims, the suspect said he was looking for someone (e.g., David, Mike). In two cases, the suspect stated he had a “pistol,” rather than “gun.” Losses included laptops, a cell phone, and iPods.

Witnesses described the suspect as a black male, 25-40 years of age, 6’ tall, stocky build, and a shaved/bald head. In all three cases, he was wearing denim shorts.

What you can do:

• Install good locks and use them. Lock the door whether you’re at home or you’re away — even for a few minutes.
• Turn on exterior lights at night.
• Don’t open your door to anyone who has no business inside.
• Never leave garage doors open.
• Meet your neighbors, so you can watch out for each other.
• Call 911 to report suspicious activity. This includes strangers walking down your alley and looking in garages, loitering, or vehicles circling the block with occupants you don’t recognize.

Please call the Second Precinct’s crime prevention specialists: Nicholas Juarez (612-673-2797) for neighborhoods south of Broadway; or Carol Oosterhuis (612-673-2874) for neighborhoods north of Broadway.

Crime reports by neighborhood, June 6–17

The following crime reports are compiled from the public information section of crime reports filed by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD), as emailed through the MPD’s GeoCanvas pilot project. These reports may not list all crimes in all areas; Bridgeland News is working to see if our coverage needs to be improved. Resident reports, when available, are included after the neighborhood sections.

More crime information is available, including weekly crime maps by precinct and monthly crime statistics by neighborhood, on the City of Minneapolis website.

Offenses listed do not reflect subsequent charges or that charges were filed. Names have been withheld in most cases, unless charges have been verified. In these emailed reports, public information is truncated for space; for some crimes, further information will be investigated.

If you have information about any of these crimes, call the MPD Tip Line: 612-692-TIPS (8477). For a certified copy of a police report from the Criminal History Unit, call 612-673-2808, or stop in to Room 31 at City Hall, 350 S. Fifth St. during regular business hours.

Resident reports

Last night, someone broke the passenger side door ghlass in my silver Honda Accord, parked in front of my house @ 100 Melbourne Ave SE. The thief took a black and silver messenger bag (our diaper bag) that was sitting in the passenger seat. A police report has been filed. Takeaway lesson would be to not leave anything that even LOOKS like
it might be valuable sitting in view. If any neighbor happens to notice a black and silver messenger bag full of diapers sitting in their bushes, I would love to get it back.
