Legacy Letter Video Features Mississippi River Gorge
Carolyn Carr, a longtime member of LCC’s River Gorge Committee, submitted
her idea for a short video spot about the River Gorge and our restoration
work and it’s airing now on TPT Cable. You can see it here:

The piece about the Gorge is part of the Legacy Letters campaign
organized by 1000 Friends of Minnesota, which partnered with TPT to produce
short video clips of individuals briefly sharing what they appreciate about
Minnesota. Our thanks for Carolyn for putting the spotlight on the River

Backyard Harvest Program Coming to Longfellow
The Backyard Harvest program is a community-building program in urban
permaculture providing both garden fresh food and garden education for
homeowners and neighborhoods, as well as entrepreneurial and small-scale
food production training for the farmers. BH farmers contract with
homeowners and communities to create gardens in their backyards, maintain
the gardens and harvest a fresh basket of produce weekly for each family.
Backyard Harvest is a program of the non-profit Permaculture Research
Institute, Cold Climate.
The basic garden option (a 100 sq ft food garden plot) is expected to cost
approximately $1,100, which includes soil and compost inputs, labor for
installation and maintenance, plants and seeds, and other needed materials.
Some of these costs are one time set up costs and participation in the
second year of the program (2010) would be less.
For more information see: www.pricoldclimate.org/about_backyard_harvest
Questions about the program or to set up a consultation (the first step to
becoming a customer), please contact Krista Leraas, Program
Coordinator, at harvest@pricoldclimate.org
Longfellow Garden Club meets Wednesday, March 11, 7:00-9:00 pm at Epworth
United Methodist Church (3207 37th Ave So, Mpls).
Eleanor Wagner (owner of Eleanor’s Herbs, member of the
Herb Society and author of two herb cookbooks), will speak on
growing, harvesting, preserving, and using herbs.
Historic Preservation Meeting in Longfellow
The City of Minneapolis is conducting a historic resource survey in the
Seward, Longfellow, Cooper, Howe, and Hiawatha neighborhoods to assess the
potential for historic properties. The City was first surveyed for historic
resources in the 1970s and many of today¹s designated landmarks and historic
districts are a result of this original survey. The City has undertaken a
re-survey because of aging properties and changing attitudes about which
types of historic resources need to be identified, for example increasing
the importance of historic landscapes and cultural and ethnic group
resources. This upcoming meeting will be an opportunity to gather
information about historic resources from community members. Please feel
free to bring your knowledge of historic places in the neighborhoods!
