Targets were all women; purses or possessions were taken

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) issued a crime alert on Nov. 17 following six armed robberies that took place in the Second Precinct between Saturday, Nov. 15 and Monday, Nov 17. Four of these took place in the Bridgeland area — three within a several-block area of Marcy-Holmes.

The Bridge-area crimes occurred at:

2500 block of University Ave SE on Nov 16 at 2:53 a.m.
12th Ave SE and 7th St SE on Nov 16 at 3:07 a.m.
10th Ave SE and 7th St SE on Nov 16 at 9:25 p.m.
12th Ave SE and 4th St SE on Nov 17 at 12:52 a.m.

All victims were female who had their purse or possessions taken. The suspects are described as at least two black males between the ages of 16 and 29. A dark or black four-door car was seen in the area, with possibly a third black male driving it, in several cases.

The MPD issued these safety tips:

Avoid carrying a purse or bag with valuables (large amounts of cash, checkbook, credit cards, etc). If you carry cash, carry a small amount in your front pocket or wear a waist pack that can be covered by a shirt or jacket. Do not resist if a robber wants your handbag. Being pulled down by the shoulder strap of your bag or purse can cause injuries.

Victims of robberies can be any age and race and can be men or women. Take the following precautions:

Be observant and aware of your surroundings.
Walk in well-lit areas.
Avoid alleys or poorly-lit areas. Report street lights that are out by calling 311.
Try to walk with another person.
Carry as little cash as possible.
Plan ahead. Use the safest and most direct route.
Carry your keys and money in a pocket, not in a purse or wallet.

If a robber approaches you, do not resist. Try to get a good description of the robber, as well as vehicle description and license plate number. Call 911 immediately.
